Review of the Jedi: Season Wrap-up
Another season of galactic adventure come and gone. It's certainly been exciting and I've had fun bringing you my thoughts and opinions on the show. But with all the lightsabers put away, let's look back on this season's episodes and see how it stacks as a whole.
Shall we?
The Onderon arc
Ahsoka and her would-be boyfriend aiding rebels on a Separatist-allied planet. This got old real fast. Don't get me wrong, the Onderon arc had the makings of a good story. There was a uniqueness to the situation and it could have had a lot of interesting ramifications. The problem is it didn't really do anything with that potential. Instead it played it safe, retreading territory we'd already been over narratively in past seasons. But the characters were likable and it wasn't boring, despite the overall plot feeling a bit dragged out. Pretty average.
Score: 3/5
The Younglings arc
A pack of Jedi younglings must grow up fast as they face trials, pirates and General Grievous. I liked this arc much more than other people. I understand why, I'd be lying if some of the younglings weren't a little annoying, but what can I say. It's fun. The action is exciting and there's even some good jokes in a few places. Really its worst crime is having nothing to do with the larger conflict of the war. The connection is tenuous and can't really be justified. But it's light and breezy in a season that got rather dark near the end. For what it was, it was entertaining.
Score: 3.5/5
The D-Squad arc
R2 and a group of droid commandoes infiltrate a Separatist ship to retrieve a secret decoder. Uh. This sucked. They took what could have been a perfectly serviceable one-off episode and stretched it out to four. There was never enough story to justify that and it just feels padded and contrived after not too long. Even the addition of a clone commando and the awesome 100th episode as its finale couldn't save this arc. Low point of the season.
Score: 2/5 (for the finale mostly)
Revival & the Darth Maul arc
Darth Maul and his brother Savage build an army to get revenge on Obi-Wan and the Republic. Hot damn, this is what they were saving all the good shit for. Great performances, excellent action scenes, well- characterized writing. Clone Wars is often at its best when focusing on villains and it shows here. Anchored by Sam Witwer's Maul, this was a dark action piece where everything just seemed to get worse for our heroes. And the Sidious/Maul fight? Probably worth it just for that.
Score: 5/5
The Hitchcock arc
Framed for a crime she didn't commit, Ahsoka dives into Coruscant's depths to prove her innocence. And here was the other high point of the season. These four episodes created a compelling mystery with just enough twists to keep you guessing. And if you didn't like Ahsoka before this, you will. Some of the shit she gets put through in this arc just makes you feel for her. But yeah, great lightsaber fights combined with some of the series best music and environments makes for an excellent finale. The Ending will have you in tears.
Score: 4.5/5
Season score: 4/5
And that was the season. Some really great highs but also some really awful lows. Not to mention a few things that will never be the same. I hope you've enjoyed experiencing it with me and can't wait to see where things go.
Until then, may the force be with you.
